A UNIQUE DISCOVERY

We feel incredibly fortunate to have sourced this remarkable cask from Chamarel Distillery, one of Mauritius' most esteemed producers and a champion of pure sugarcane juice rum. Founded in 2008 by the Couacaud family on the lush Domaine de l'Exil estate in Mauritius' southwest, Chamarel is dedicated to crafting authentic rums using only estate-grown sugarcane.

Distilled in 2014 from red and yellow sugarcane varieties and aged in both tropical and continental climates, this rum embodies the unique Mauritian terroir. After an initial two years of tropical aging in ex-Bourbon casks in Mauritius, the rum completed an additional seven years of continental maturation in the UK, resting in ex-English whisky casks that previously held red wine. This single cask bottling from 2023 yielded just 273 bottles, capturing the spirit of Chamarel’s commitment to quality and tradition.

RICH AND COMPELLING

Nose – Tantalising medley of fruity aromas dominated by succulent cherries and luscious prunes, followed by notes of vanilla, hay, warm spices and fragrant herbs.

Palate – Poised, harmonious, with flavours of caramelised red apple, blossom honey, and dried fruits. Refreshing dark chocolate note on the finish

DISTILLERY

The Chamarel distillery boasts a rich history deeply rooted in Mauritius' rum-making tradition. It is one of the newest on the island: its story began in 1996 when the Couacaud family purchased the Domaine de l'Exil in Chamarel, spanning 220 hectares dedicated to sugarcane cultivation in Mauritius' fertile southwest. In 2008, the family decided to construct the distillery from scratch with a singular focus: crafting pure sugarcane juice rum exclusively sourced from their estate's plantations. Over time, the next generation of the Couacaud family has joined the team, with the two eldest brothers now actively involved in the distillery's operations.
