A UNIQUE DISCOVERY

Guatemala's rum production has deep roots in its history, geography, and culture. Indigenous traditions of fermentation predate European contact. The Spanish introduced sugarcane, which thrived in Guatemala's climate, leading to rum production from molasses. Post-independence, the sugarcane industry grew, and rum became central to the economy despite 19th-century instability. The 20th century brought modernization, with brands like Ron Zacapa gaining international acclaim. Today, Guatemalan rum is celebrated for its quality, particularly its use of "sugarcane honey" and high-altitude aging. The industry supports local agriculture and focuses on sustainability and fair trade practices.

Our contribution to the rich tradition is distilled from molasses using a column still, experienced 3 years of tropical aging in Guatemala and 8 years of continental aging in ex-Scotch whisky casks, culminating in a single cask bottling in 2023.

RICH AND COMPELLING

Nose – Luscious notes of cacao and milk chocolate intertwine with a subtle, toasted nuttiness and gentle aromas of winter spices.

Palate – Velvety, with rich chocolate flavours, complemented by notes of coffee and nutty tones of walnuts and toasted nuts. Dry red apples and a subtle hint of spices follow on the midpalate, and a satisfying, lingering finish.

DISTILLERY

The Destiladora de Alcoholes y Rones Sociedad Anónima, commonly known as DARSA, stands as Guatemala's premier rum producer. Renowned for its exceptional range of distilled products, including the distinguished Botran rum and the world-famous Ron Zacapa. Maturation at 185 meters above sea level for several years in the Hondo River region. This choice of place, with high humidity, allows a very fast and intense maturation, because Rio Hondo is one of the warmest areas of Guatemala, with an almost tropical climate.

The result is one of the lightest rums in our collection, with a medium body and moderate sugariness.
